International Women’s Day (IWD)stemmed from the struggles of working-class women for better pay and conditions, and has been observed since the early 1900s.
By then, the English Suffragists had already adopted Green, White, and Violet – Give Women the Vote -as the colours for their flag.
The banner of IWD helped launch new campaigns for suffrage and equal rights. In Australia, women were given the right to vote in 1902.
However, it was only in 1962 that First Nations people were offered the option to vote, becoming compulsory in 1984.
